Summer Solstice

This important event in nature which occurs around the 21st of December in the Southern Hemisphere marks the passing of the longest day and the shortest night of the year. From the summer solstice onwards the nights will become longer and the days shorter still being of unequal length however, until the Autumn Equinox, when night and day will be of equal length. After the Equinox the nights become longer and the days shorter, bringing the phase of Darkness, Rest, and Sleep into full manifestation. The Summer Solstice heralds the beginning of the cycle.

It heralds the phase when the Light of analytical reasoning can rest for a while to allow the deeper aspirations and feelings of Self to come to the fore. It is the phase of Rest, Sleep, and Darkness, when the pace of outer activity decreases. It is the time for reflection, introspection, and contemplation. It is the time when our thoughts are turned inwards to contemplate the big questions of existence – who we are, what we are doing here, and what our personal obligations and aims in life might be. This is the time to examine our goals, our aspirations and our intentions, and clarify the understanding of our purpose in life.

To help you celebrate the Summer Solstice we give you the following traditional Celtic blessing. Read it while sitting quietly and mentally attune with its thoughts.

Deep peace of the running waves to you,

Deep peace of the flowing air to you,

Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,

Deep peace of the shining stars to you,

Deep peace of the gentle night to you,

Moon and stars pour out their healing light to you

Deep peace to you

Deep peace to you
